Hugh Parsons holds a Bachelor of Music from the U. of Toronto as well as a Masters in Jazz Education from the U. of Victoria. He currently lives in Kelowna, B.C., Canada where he has been able to pursue a career which has offered a satisfying blend as educator (secondary school and university), festival adjudicator, performer and composer.

Hugh has performed extensively in the Pacific Northwest; he has conducted and composed for symphony orchestra, has received awards and publishing contracts for a large number of his jazz and pop compositions.

He has now retired from teaching in the secondary school system where he served as a music director in the areas of instrumental as well as vocal music performance; Hugh was also one of a very small number of music directors in Western Canada who also taught Advanced Placement, Music Composition. As one of the first Canadian educators to begin teaching this course, Hugh was consistently hired by the College Board to travel throughout Canada in order to present workshops to other prospective AP teachers on teaching Advanced Placement Music.

Since retiring, Hugh has focused much of his energy toward teaching private jazz piano lessons at the Kelowna Community Music School; the school has also recently offered him two commissions for original piano compositions. He also continues to serve as a festival adjudicator and performs a wide variety of professional “gigs” with other musicians.
